From Fixed Mindset to Growth Mindset: Why effort matters more than talent


For decades, many people believed intelligence and talent were fixed — you were either born gifted, or you weren’t. This way of thinking, known as a fixed mindset, limits growth by making challenges feel like threats to our identity. If failure means you’re “not smart enough,” why even try?


In contrast, a growth mindset (Dweck, 2006) sees abilities as malleable. Every mistake becomes feedback, every struggle becomes part of the learning process, and effort is the path to mastery.

The question is : how to shift from Fixed Mindset to Growth Mindset.


The Science behind growth

Psychologist Carol Dweck pioneered the concept of mindset. Her research shows that when students believe intelligence can be developed, they’re more resilient in the face of difficulty and ultimately perform better academically. In one study, middle school students taught about brain plasticity (the brain’s ability to change with practice) showed significant improvement in grades compared to peers who were not (Blackwell, Trzesniewski, & Dweck, 2007).


Neuroscience backs this up: learning creates new neural connections in the brain, strengthening pathways through repetition and practice (Draganski et al., 2004). In other words, effort literally rewires the brain.


Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

Angela Duckworth (2016), in her book Grit, emphasizes that long-term success isn’t about talent but about persistence. Her studies show that individuals who stick with their goals, even in the face of setbacks, achieve more than those who rely solely on natural ability.


Grit complements the growth mindset: when you believe effort matters, you’re more willing to persist — and persistence compounds into mastery.


Mistakes, Struggle, and Progress

  • Mistakes = Feedback. Errors highlight where learning happens. Instead of fearing failure, growth-minded individuals ask: What can I learn from this?

  • Struggle = Progress. Discomfort signals that you’re stretching your abilities. Neuroscience calls this the “desirable difficulty” principle — challenges enhance long-term retention (Bjork & Bjork, 2011).

  • Effort = Growth. Each attempt strengthens both skills and mindset, creating a cycle of improvement.


Why This Matters Beyond School

Growth mindset isn’t just for students. In workplaces, it fosters innovation, adaptability, and collaboration. In relationships, it encourages empathy and problem-solving. In personal development, it fuels resilience and wellbeing.
